Northwest Wisconsin Trails

Veikko Trail

Marengo, Wis.

Trail Options:   Point to point trail, approx. 5 km. Backcountry/ungroomed.

Trail Description: This trail is in a much more remote area than most trails in the region. It is worth the trip, however, due to its secluded beauty. It is also a great area to hike or snowshoe. Morgan Falls is only 1/2 mile and St. Peter's Dome about 2 1/2 miles. For the more adventuresome, snowshoeing the Morgan Creek valley is also an excellent option. A very enjoyable ski with a definite back country flavor can be had on theVeikko Trail. Though not groomed, the Veikko Trail may be tracked by other heartyy souls out for a winter commune with nature. The Veikko is not the kind of place you go to crank out the K's. It is,however, a delightful trek over some old logging roads and forest trails that takes in several good climbs and descents where you will be more likely to see someone in wool knickers and gaiters with their family dog in tow thanlycra and Gore-tex clad racers. The trail parallels Morgan Creek to the south and for the majority of its 5.3 kilometers traverses the northern ridge of the valley. Occasional outlooks allow you to peer out into a beautiful valley of beaver swamps, stark rock outcrops, and second growth hardwood forest. Vistas unlike anything else in this part of the state include the 1600 feet granite summit of St. Peter's Dome which lies across the valley. The Veikko can be skied point-to-point by spotting a car at the western end of the trail, but the round trip is well worth it.
