Trail Description:

This 24 kilometer trail system is situated on 2,400 acres of county forest.With terrain that ranges from gently rolling to screaming hills, it is ideallysuited for cross country skiing. The elevation at the trail head is 1,450, but by the time you reach the northeastern part of the trail it loses 250 feet inelevation. It is in this area that the trail passes an area of natural springs that bubble out of the ground year around to form the head waters of the Clam River. All the trails are machine groomed to 16 to 18 feet wide with double tracks on one side and a wide skating lane on the other. All trail junctions are marked with a map and letters. Timberland Hills offers fun and excitement for the beginning skier to the expert, including a 2.5 km lighted trail – Timberland West – 1.5 miles south of the main touring center also on County Highway H. Timberland West meanders through 500 acres of Barron County forest. It is a beginner level trail with gently rolling terrainand one small hill. The lights come on automatically at dusk and go off at approximately 11:00PM. Timberland West is groomed 30 feet wide withtracks set around the perimeter and a wide skating lane down the middle.Both Timberland Hills and Timberland West were built and are maintained by the Cumberland Area Ski Touring Association (CASTA). From the north on US Highway 63: Watch for signs. Take a right on Cty Hwy J, then a left on Cty Hwy H. Turn left on Boyd Road for the main Timberland Hills system or stay on Hwy H for the Lighted Trail (on the right). From the south on US Highway 63: Watch for signs. Take a left on Cty Hwy H. The lighted trail will be on your left; the main Timberland Hills system will be found by taking a right on Boyd Road.
